Project(s): The Role of Topological Defects in the Mechanics of Additive Manufactured 2D Architected Honeycomb Metamaterials

Bio: Chiara graduated from McMaster University with a bachelor’s in material science and engineering, and minor in sustainability. Through out her undergrade she developed an interest in novel materials for biomedical applications, which led her to begin her master’s with Dr. Yu & Hybrid 3D lab in September 2023. Her research investigates the design of hybrid materials/metamaterials, for biomedical applications. During her time with Hybrid 3D, she has been investigating the effects of topological defects on the mechanics of metamaterials, which has primarily involved SLA additive manufacturing and compression testing. Outside of the academic environment, she enjoys cooking, hikes with her dog and traveling.

Bio: Ian has worked in in vitro diagnostics and engineering education since graduating in 2018 and in 2024 started his MASc with Dr. Yu’s group. His academic interests are in additive manufacturing, biomechanics and biomimetic material. He also helps the team with some SLA and FDM printing support. When on campus and not doing research he is a Scientific Assistant with the Mechanical Engineering Department at UVic and enjoys miniature painting, board games, hiking, and mixing cocktails in his off time.

Project(s): Strain-based Optimization of Mycofabricated Materials derived from Schizophyllum commune

Bio: Viraj completed his Bachelor in Materials Engineering at McMaster University in May of 2022 with a strong background in electron microscopy and materials forensics. In search of new horizons, he joined McMaster’s Biology Department in the fall of 2022 as a Master’s student to explore the exciting intersection of mycology and the materials sciences. Primarily studying Schizophyllum commune, a model mushroom forming species with over 23,000 sexes, Viraj aims to shape the ever-adaptive fungus into a vegan leather and bioprinted living scaffolds. His end goal is to develop an understanding on how the inherently robust, yet variable biostructures of fungi could be leveraged to fabricate better functional materials for the future. With a focus on sustainability, he is eager to bring mycelium materials to the forefront and demonstrate the potential of bioinspired design.

Bio: Adam finished his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering in December 2023 and has since been working as a research assistant on Dr. Yu’s Hybrid 3D team. His primary academic interests are materials engineering, manufacturing, mechanical design, and product design with a focus on sustainability in the engineering industry. During his time working with Hybrid 3D, he has primarily worked on analyzing a novel additively manufactured Inconel-WC metal matrix composite and the development of an in-house aluminum anodizing process. When not at work, he spends his time cycling, hiking, baking, and reading anything from fantasy to historical fiction to applied psychology.

Bio: Olivia is currently a third-year mechanical engineering student at UVic. She began working with Dr. Yu in November 2023 to improve the MECH 285 labs, and officially joined the team as a co-op student in May 2024. Throughout the summer, Olivia will be the Instructional Assistant Intern (IAI) for MECH 285 and continue to refine the labs. Additionally, she’ll be involved in two other projects with the Hybrid 3D team. The first involves conducting mechanical testing and analysis on an additively manufactured Inconel-WC metal matrix composite. The second project focuses on developing a materials engineering teaching tool to make material science more engaging for students. In her free time, Olivia enjoys baking, hiking, surfing, and camping.

Isabel Dinneny (she/her/hers)

Bio: Isabel is currently in her final year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria. Since December 2023, she has been working as a part-time research assistant in Dr. Yu’s Hybrid 3D research group. In her future as a mechanical engineer, she aspires to advance sustainability, ideally working in the field of nuclear fusion. As part of this research group, Isabel has been primarily working on a project related to incorporating ceramic powder into resin for SLA printing applications. Additionally, she has been assisting on a project focusing on the topological defects in 3D printed honeycomb structures. Outside of classes and this research group, she enjoys travelling, running, and hiking.

Bio: Annette graduated from the University of Victoria with a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering and a minor in applied ethics. Through previous work investigating the microarchitecture of biological materials, she developed an interest in architected materials and joined the Hybrid 3D research group in December 2023 as a research assistant. Currently she is working on projects with applications in the biomedical, sport, and automotive sectors. In her free time, she enjoys being out in nature with her dog hiking, camping, and skiing.

Asher Barnsdale (he/him/his)

Bio: Asher is in his third year of mechanical engineering at UVic. He joined the Hybrid 3D lab in September 2023 to develop an educational tool that makes learning about material science and materials engineering more engaging. Currently, he is working on playtesting the tool with groups of high school and university students. Outside of school, Asher Chairs the IEEE UVic Student Branch and works to create more hands-on education opportunities at UVic. He also enjoys climbing, backpacking, and aviation – designing and building RC aircraft with the UVic AERO club.

Khan Sakib (he/him/his)

Bio: Khan is a 4th-year mechanical engineering student at the University of Victoria. He has completed all his course and co-op requirements except for one course, which he is fulfilling through a technical project under the supervision of Dr. Yu. This project involves designing a library of parameterized CAD designs of lattice units, conducting elastic simulations of these lattices, and writing a user manual for future researchers to 3D print them.
Before joining UVic, Khan worked as a mechanical engineering technologist, gaining experience in applied research and building infrastructure engineering. His journey to Victoria, BC, was an adventurous one, as he drove over 6000 kilometers from Halifax, NS with a friend, stopping in seven cities along the way. Khan's future goal is to become a professional engineer and contribute to community-beneficial projects. Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, he enjoys playing soccer, hiking, swimming, and traveling.
